Addressing tips for Germany
- Postcodes have five digits and are written to the left of the town name.[1]
- Never write a country code (D- or DE-) in front of the postcode: UPU warns that it can delay processing on sorting machines.[1]
- An apartment number goes on the street line, after the house number and a double slash: Rhondorfer Str. 666 // Appartment 47.[1]
- A sub-locality (Ortsteil) goes on its own line between the addressee and the street line in the UPU specimen, for example "Ortsteil Neukoelln".[1]
- A PO box line reads Postfach followed by the number in groups of two digits separated by spaces, counted from the last digit: Postfach 3 41 41.[1]
- For poste restante, write Postlagernd instead of the street line, then the postcode and town.[1]
- Write the address left-aligned, in one font and size, without frames or highlighting, in dark ink on a light background, no wider than 10 cm.[1]

Questions about sending mail to Germany
- How long does mail to Germany take?
- We estimate 3โ7 business days after mailing. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, and the count starts on the day we mail your letter, not the day you order.
- Can I send a letter to Germany from another country?
- Yes. You order online from wherever you are, and we print and mail the letter for you, so you don't need stamps or a trip to the post office. Once your order is assigned, its page shows the country it was mailed from.
- Can I add a return receipt to a letter to Germany?
- Yes. Choose Registered letter and add the return receipt. The recipient signs on delivery and the signed receipt is posted back to the sender address on your letter. A sender address is required.
- Can I track a letter to Germany?
- Yes, with a tracked or registered letter. Tracking updates depend on the postal networks along the way, so they may not cover every step. Your order page shows the updates we receive.
- Do I write D- or DE- before a German postcode?
- No. UPU says a country code must never be written in front of the postcode for mail to Germany, because it can delay processing on sorting machines.[1]
- Where do I write the apartment number in a German address?
- On the street line, after the house number and a double slash, as in Rhondorfer Str. 666 // Appartment 47.[1]
- How do I write a PO box address in Germany?
- Use Postfach and the number in groups of two digits, counted from the last digit, then the postcode and town: Postfach 3 41 41, then 10724 BERLIN.[1]
- Can I send a letter to a Packstation or an address with a sub-locality line?
- Not fully for now. UPU shows a Packstation address with a customer-number line, and a sub-locality on its own line, but MaisonMail has no field for either yet. Enter the street, postcode and town correctly; the postcode identifies the delivery area.
