    Addressing tips for France

    • Postcodes have five digits and come before the town name. The first two digits identify the département.[1]
    • Address lines run from the most specific detail (addressee) to the most general (postcode and town). For mail from abroad the country goes on a last line.[1]
    • Use six lines at most for mail within France, seven for mail from abroad, with no more than 38 characters per line, one space between words and no blank lines.[1]
    • Flat, floor and hallway details go on a line above the street line, and entrance or building names on the line after it (for example "Entrée A Bâtiment Jonquille"). MaisonMail has one field for these details and prints it above the street line.[1]
    • Write the house number first, then the street name: 25 RUE DE L EGLISE. UPU recommends capitals for the last three lines and no punctuation from the street line onwards.[1]
    • UPU's list of thoroughfare abbreviations includes AV (avenue), BD (boulevard), ALL (allée), IMP (impasse), PL (place) and RTE (route).[1]
    • In the town line, SAINT and SAINTE are written ST and STE: SAINT AGNANT becomes ST AGNANT.[1]
    • Keep CEDEX when the address has it. It may be followed by a one- or two-digit number, as for Paris, Lyon and Marseille (34092 MONTPELLIER CEDEX 5). Mail addressed without CEDEX no longer gets special CEDEX handling.[1]

Territories that use France's postal system

Some addresses with France's postcodes are separate postal destinations. French Guiana, French Polynesia, French Southern Territories, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Réunion, St. Barthélemy, St. Martin, St. Pierre & Miquelon and Wallis & Futuna aren't available yet.[1]

Questions about sending mail to France

How long does mail to France take?
We estimate 2–4 business days after mailing. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, and the count starts on the day we mail your letter, not the day you order.
Can I send a letter to France from another country?
Yes. You order online from wherever you are, and we print and mail the letter for you, so you don't need stamps or a trip to the post office. Once your order is assigned, its page shows the country it was mailed from.
Can I add a return receipt to a letter to France?
Yes. Choose Registered letter and add the return receipt. The recipient signs on delivery and the signed receipt is posted back to the sender address on your letter. A sender address is required.
Can I track a letter to France?
Yes, with a tracked or registered letter. Tracking updates depend on the postal networks along the way, so they may not cover every step. Your order page shows the updates we receive.
Do you deliver to French Guiana, French Polynesia, French Southern Territories, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Réunion, St. Barthélemy, St. Martin, St. Pierre & Miquelon and Wallis & Futuna?
Not yet. We don't send there at the moment. If you enter an address there, the send flow tells you before you pay.
Can I send a letter to a CEDEX address?
Yes. A CEDEX address is an ordinary French address whose town line ends in CEDEX, sometimes with a number (33506 LIBOURNE CEDEX). Enter it in the town field and keep CEDEX: UPU warns that mail without it loses CEDEX handling.[1]
Can I send a letter to an address with a BP or a lieu-dit?
Only partly for now. UPU puts a PO box (BP) or a lieu-dit on its own line after the street, but MaisonMail can't print a separate line there yet. Enter it at the end of the street line (for example 22 RUE DES FLEURS BP 40122) and keep the postcode and town as they are. Don't use the flat or building field for it: that field prints above the street.
Where do the postcode and town go in a French address?
On the same line, postcode first: 33500 LIBOURNE. The postcode has five digits and is written to the left of the town name.[1]
Where do I write the flat number or building name?
On a line above the street. UPU's specimen puts the apartment, floor or hallway first, then the entrance or building name, then the house number and street.[1]
Is a registered letter enough for a formal notice or to cancel a contract?
That depends on the rules that apply to your letter, which we can't assess. Check your contract or the official guidance, or read our guide on standard letters versus registered mail.
