Addressing tips for the United States
- An address has these lines: additional recipient information (optional), addressee, street number and name (or PO Box, rural route, highway or general delivery), then locality, state abbreviation and postcode, then the country.[1]
- The last line is the city, the two-letter state abbreviation and the ZIP code, in that order: SPRINGFIELD VA 22162-1010.[1]
- The ZIP code has five digits or nine, with a hyphen between the fifth and sixth: 22162-1010.[1]
- Apartment, suite and floor go at the end of the street line, using the standard abbreviation: 1500 E MAIN AVE STE 201.[1]
- UPU's specimens are written in capitals with USPS standard abbreviations (ST, AVE, STE). The USPS booklet Postal Addressing Standards (Publication 28) defines them.[1]
- A PO box line replaces the street line: PO Box 34, then DULUTH MN 55803-0034.[1]
- Puerto Rico addresses use the state code PR, and may carry a district line (URB) above the street.[1]

Questions about sending mail to the United States

- We estimate 7–12 business days after mailing. It is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery date, and the count starts on the day we mail your letter, not the day you order.
- Can I send a letter to the United States from another country?
- Yes. You order online from wherever you are, and we print and mail the letter for you, so you don't need stamps or a trip to the post office. Once your order is assigned, its page shows the country it was mailed from.
- Can I add a return receipt to a letter to the United States?
- Yes. Choose Registered letter and add the return receipt. The recipient signs on delivery and the signed receipt is posted back to the sender address on your letter. A sender address is required.
- Can I track a letter to the United States?
- Yes, with a tracked or registered letter. Tracking updates depend on the postal networks along the way, so they may not cover every step. Your order page shows the updates we receive.
- Do I need to enter a state or province for the United States?
- Yes, the address form asks for it and we print it as part of the address. Pick the address from the suggestions to fill it in automatically.
- Do I write the state as two letters in a US address?
