Notice to Quit Letter (Tenant)

This letter tells your landlord or the managing agent that you intend to leave your rented home. It starts the notice period after which your lease ends.

When to send it

Send it as soon as you have decided to move out. The notice period is usually 3 months for an unfurnished home and 1 month for a furnished one, reduced to 1 month in zones tendues and certain situations (new job, health, first job, RSA…). The notice runs from the day the landlord receives the letter.

What you need to know

Send it as a registered letter with acknowledgement of receipt — the receipt date sets the start of your notice period.
State your move-out date and, where relevant, the reason that entitles you to a reduced one-month notice.
Mention the property address and ask to arrange the exit inspection (état des lieux de sortie).
Keep paying rent and charges until the end of the notice period.
