Cancelling your French health insurance (mutuelle): infra-annual cancellation and letter
How to cancel your French complementary health insurance (mutuelle): infra-annual cancellation at any time after one year, the annual renewal date and the Chatel law, the cases allowing cancellation at any time (change of situation, compulsory company scheme), and the role of the registered letter with return receipt.
Quick answer
Since infra-annual cancellation, you can cancel your complementary health insurance (mutuelle) at any time after one year of membership, with no fees or reason, subject to one month's notice. Before one year, cancellation happens on the annual renewal date (the Chatel law requires the insurer to warn you of the deadline) or in the event of a change of situation. Your new mutuelle can handle the formalities. The registered letter with return receipt remains the safest proof of your request.
| Who it's for | Members of an individual complementary health insurance wishing to switch or stop |
| After 1 year | Infra-annual cancellation: at any time, one month's notice, no fees |
| Before 1 year | On the annual renewal date (Chatel law) or on a change of situation |
| Switching mutuelle | The new mutuelle can cancel the old contract for you, on mandate |
| Any-time grounds | Compulsory company scheme, marriage, moving home, change of status… |
| When AR is required | Always — the AR dates the request and starts the one-month notice |
Switching mutuelle has become much simpler: no more waiting for the contract's anniversary once the first year is over. Here are the rules for your situation.
1. After one year: infra-annual cancellation
This is the most common and most flexible case. Once your contract has been running for more than one year:
- you can cancel at any time, with no need to justify yourself;
- no fees or penalty can be claimed;
- cancellation takes effect one month after the insurer receives your request;
- contributions overpaid beyond the effective date must be refunded to you.
2. Before one year: renewal date and Chatel law
If your contract is less than one year old, you can only cancel on its annual renewal date, respecting the notice period provided (often two months). The Chatel law protects members: the insurer must send you a renewal notice reminding you of the cancellation deadline. If it warns you late or not at all, you have an additional period to cancel. See our guide on Hamon-law and Chatel-law cancellation.
3. Grounds to cancel at any time
Regardless of seniority, certain changes of situation open a right to cancel, generally within three months and on proof:
- joining a compulsory company mutuelle;
- marriage, divorce, moving home;
- change of profession or of social-security scheme;
- retirement or job loss.
The most common case: your employer enrols you in a compulsory group mutuelle, which lets you cancel your individual contract without waiting.
4. Letting the new mutuelle handle it
As with car or home insurance, you can give a mandate to your new mutuelle so it cancels the old contract and ensures continuity of cover. This is the simplest way to avoid any gap without complementary insurance. Still, check that the old cancellation has been properly registered.

6. Common mistakes
- Cancelling before one year with no ground: outside the renewal date and without a change of situation, the request will be refused.
- Ending up with no cover: coordinate the effective date with the start of the new mutuelle.
- Forgetting the supporting document for a change of situation: early cancellation will be refused.
- Overlooking the renewal notice (Chatel law): it sometimes opens an extra cancellation window.
- Not claiming the refund of contributions collected beyond the effective date.
In short: after one year, infra-annual cancellation lets you leave at any time, with no fees, with one month's notice. Before one year, play the annual renewal date and the Chatel law, or a justified change of situation. In every case, a registered letter with return receipt dates your request and starts the notice period — it is what makes the cancellation indisputable.
